Local languages: The local language of Turkey is Turkish, however English is widely understood and spoken to a conversational level in touristic areas. Best time to visit: The best time of the year to visit Turkey is between Spring and Autumn or the months of April to May, and September to mid-November. It’s within these months tourist will enjoy comfortable and pleasant weather and temperatures, with clear blue skies.

Visa requirements (for British passport holders) : British passport holders must apply for a visa before travelling to Turkey. A visa will cost just under £35 and is valid up to 3 months upon arrival. Your passport must also be valid for 60 days beyond the expiry date of your Turkish visa.

Key Events and Festivals:

Hidirellez - The Hıdırellez, which falls on May 5 - 6, is a celebration of “the day of Hızır.” It’s these two days that the prophets Hızır and İlyas met in Islamic belief. It is believed that all wishes that are made on that night will be granted within the span of a year. Each province celebrate with their own unique way.

Ramazan Bayrami - Three-day festival when sweets are eaten to celebrate the end of the fast of Ramadan month. Also known as "Seker (sweets) Bayrami" since it's customary to offer candies to family members and friends that are visiting.

Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth & Sports Day – A national holiday which celebrates the arrival of Atatürk in Samsun in 1919. It also remembers the beginning of the War of Independence. This national holiday is dedicated to the youth with lots of youth friendly and sports activities.

Which airport will you fly in to: Istanbul Atatürk Airport is the main international airport serving Istanbul, and the biggest airport in Turkey by total number of passengers, destinations served and aircraft movements. Most visitors flying from the UK with arrive at Istanbul Atatürk Airport.

Must try food: Menemen - A delicious Turkish style omelet popularly known as one of the most ‘must have’ breakfast dish. Roasted onions and peppers are boiled thoroughly with tomatoes and finally mixed with eggs, herbs, parsley, pepper and grounded red pepper to provide a mouthwatering and delicious light breakfast.

Künefe - Traditional Arab cheese pastry. The unsalted cheese in between the two layers of kadayıf is the essence. Kadayıf are thin fibers of dough, a simple mix of water and flour. It is served warm because it is freshly baked and soaked in syrup.

Iskender Kebap – Doner meat. Döner is a dish of beaten pieces of meat seasoned with suet, local herbs and spices, skewered on a spit and grilled vertically. Leaves, thinly sliced pieces of döner, are served on pieces of pide, a pita like bread. Pide pieces are dressed with butter and tomato sauce.

Manti – Also known as Turkish ravioli, Manti is a hot dish served with cold yogurt and garlic. Manti is somewhat similar to dumplings consisting of dough and its grounded beef or lamb mixed with onion, salt and pepper.

Visit Alanya - The coastal town is a wonderful place to spend the day, with the overlooking Alanya Castle well worth a visit. Head to the markets for a spot of shopping, and watch the world go by in a local restaurant.

From here you can also board a pirate ship...or a regular ship and head out to the outlying Dim Caves. In land, head to the Manavgat Waterfalls, or enjoy a Jeep safari to the Tauras Mountains.
