Beijing Nunjie Mosque

Beijing is also home to the oldest mosque in China, home to millions of Muslims that live in the city; the Niujie mosque which was first built in 966 during the Liao dynasty. At that time, it was forbidden to from constructing other than in the Chinese style, and hence today the Nuijie mosque is eclectic and the most unique place of worship in the Muslim world we have come across.

Beijing, China’s capital city, is home to the sprawling Tiananmen Square, a must see for all those interested in recent history. For those interested in slightly older history, the expansive Forbidden City is just opposite and is the world’s largest palace complex. Home to almost 20 emperors and two major dynasties for over 500 years, the UNESCO World Heritage site consists of 980 beautiful buildings. Unfortunately there’s no prize for visiting them all, although we did try! Legend has it that if you rub one of the brass door nails in the Forbidden City, you will have a long and happy marriage, something we had to try for ourselves.
